Literacy is a highly distinguished skill in classrooms everywhere. Reading and reading comprehension are both key elements of literacy. Fountas and Pinnell (2017) claim that the ability to read is essential for education and a quality personal life. Guided reading is an in-classroom approach to strengthen, extend, and deepen students’ literacy skills. During guided reading, teachers give students the opportunity to apply familiar strategies to unfamiliar texts in order to scaffold students toward reading independently (Fountas & Pinnell, 2009a). Helping students improve their literacy skills is the responsibility of teachers across all grade levels. Teachers can maximize the effectiveness of their reading instruction by understanding what guided reading is, as well as the benefits and limitations of the different guided reading instructional models.
